How to access this service

We accept referrals from health care professionals in North Middlesex University Hospital and Barnet General Hospital and from all inpatient departments, including A&E. Referrals are made as soon as a need for a mental health input is identified via our internal bleep systems.

Who is this service for?

This is a specialist mental health service based in North Middlesex University Hospital and Barnet General Hospital provided by Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust.

The team will see anyone aged over 16 who might be suffering from mental health problems in A&E or as a NMUH inpatient. It is a 24-hour mental health service staffed by specialist psychiatric nurses, psychiatrists, a clinical psychologist and associate mental health workers.

What to expect

We are a team of experienced specialist mental health professionals who provide high quality psychiatric assessments and brief treatments both in an emergency setting such as the A&E department and inpatient wards within North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH) and Barnet General Hospital. We also offer advice and information to colleagues in managing mental health problems within the acute hospital setting. We are the link between the general hospital and mental health services.

We aim to talk to you about any mental health problems you may have and discuss with you what support and treatment you might need. We will then refer you to appropriate mental health services, if required; this may include intensive home-based treatment with the crisis team or admission to a mental health unit in collaboration with crisis services, if there are serious risks to yourself or others. We also liaise with your GP and/or other services involved in your care, including your community mental health team if you have one.

Useful Information

Associated services

We can provide information about other services that might be helpful to you (eg IAPT for psychological intervention, drug and alcohol services, MIND, Citizens Advice Bureau, Samaritans). We can also provide advice and information regarding mental health and wellbeing to you and your relative or carer.

In addition, we provide training and support to NMUH staff in helping them to identify and manage mental health problems.

Further details

A patient feedback questionnaire may be provided after being assessed by the Psychiatry Liaison Team.

There is also a monthly patient and carers discussion group run by the Mental Health Liaison Team, which provides support to people that have been involved with MH in the acute hospital. This provides signposting and discussion around different support services for both patients and carers.

In addition we have a carer’s group. If you are interested in taking part please contact 020 8216 4876 and ask for Dorothy.
