Dr Joels, the Clinical Director for Services for Ageing and Mental Health (SAMH) with Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust (C&I), has been shortlisted in the Clinical Leader of the Year category for the HSJ Awards 2014.
The HSJ Awards are recognised as the most prestigious awards in UK health, championing best practice and innovation to overcome the challenges that face the health sector and Dr Joels was thrilled to find the work she and her team do has received national recognition.
She said, "Over the last few years we have been able to make significant changes to our service models to improve the quality of care that we are able to deliver to older adults with mental health needs. This has been as a result of a huge amount of hard work by a very dedicated group of staff. I am very fortunate that I work with some really inspirational colleagues that have been instrumental in helping to develop our ideas and take the models forward. This nomination is a reflection of the work that we do and I am delighted that it shines a light on older people's services ."
The service has memory services, community mental health teams, community liaison services to care homes, a continuing care ward, a nursing home, a dementia navigator service, two dementia day centres and a community recovery service for older people.
There are approximately 125 staff members and the service receives in the region of 1850 referrals per year and has a caseload of 2010.
Dr Joels dedication and hard work has meant she has helped to provide a range of quality and service improvements across the service line which were underpinned by a commitment to patients and their carers receiving excellent care from a skilled, well supported and happy staff group.
