The trust has been shortlisted for Improving Staff Experience for its Change and Inspire Health and Wellbeing Programme in this year’s prestigious Nursing Times Awards.
The nomination recognises the work we are doing to provide staff with the ability to lead healthier lifestyles through structured initiatives which are designed to encourage better diet and healthier eating, increased physical activity, and better mental health.
NHS staff are often seen as role models, a poll commissioned in 2014 by the Royal Society of Public Health found patients are less likely to make a lifestyle change if the professionals providing advice do not lead healthy lifestyles (eg are overweight). The programme focuses on putting wellbeing at the heart of the business and its benefits to improving staff engagement and satisfaction, team work, productivity and sickness absence which all impact on patient care.
Health and Wellbeing Manager Zipporah Jempeji stated "I am delighted that the Change and Inspire health and wellbeing programme was shortlisted for a Nursing Times Award. At C&I we have worked incredibly hard to improve the wellbeing of staff and the overall working experience with a comprehensive range of initiatives and services. We know that healthier and happier staff deliver better patient care and will continue to work hard so that C&I remains an employer of choice delivering exceptional patient care".
We now offer staff regular yoga, sports massage, resilience courses, healthy living challenges, annual health and wellbeing events, mindfulness and mindfulness based cognitive behavioural therapy as well as a physiotherapy service with impressive evaluative outcomes. Additionally, our Health and Wellbeing Manager has been working hard trying to set up a football team and running club with further managerial training on mental wellbeing.
All initiatives are offered by internal staff who are fully trained and qualified. We have also promoted campaigns such as Time to Talk, No Smoking Day, NHS Change Day and Men’s Health Week as well as revamping our staff benefits.
It has helped reduce stress-related absence saving £3,000 per employee. Those who do take stress-related leave also take shorter periods off work.

The winners of the 2015 Nursing Times Awards will be announced at the inspiring and prestigious ceremony on 12 November at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
